The concept of #EYEreflect evolved during a Sunday afternoon, when I opened my Instagram app and more than twenty selfies (of friends, students, and strangers) popped up on my feed. Most were different shots/angles of the same people, but they had different comments about how ‘good’ they looked that day, and how they ‘needed’ to capture the moment.

Taking a picture of oneself is not bad. In fact, there’s an intriguing video below, circulated by Dove, that encourages young women to create their own definition of beauty using self portraiture. I hope that you’ll watch it, and that it will inspire you.

But, you know I can’t just leave it at that.

I’d like to challenge everyone to Embody Your Essence, and reflect what makes you beautiful. (See what I did there… #EYEreflect)

You’re probably wondering what the heck I mean by that!?! In all honesty, I think our culture is caught up in ‘I‘, and we’ve forgotten the ‘eye‘. It’s imperative that we all understand what makes us who we are, and we should challenge ourselves to expose our essence in social media instead of everything else.

I’ll be the first to take on the #EYEreflect challenge, embodying my essence in future pictures and posts. I’ll turn the camera on the people and things in my life that make me beautiful, and share them with you.

The Bible. Reading it makes me feel beautiful. The idea that God knows me, and cares about me is life changing.

Post and tweet pictures of what embodies your essence, and don’t forget to include #EYEreflect, so we can all share what makes us feel beautiful! Each week I’ll be sharing more of my reflections on this blog, so stay tuned.
