Here’s an impromptu interview with Ollie (Olivia) Miller, the main character of Descent. You can read about her adventure with Mateo, Alexis and Jesse in the novel. Whether you’ve read the story or not, here are some quirky factoids about this teenage girl and what makes her tick.
It’s Olivia Rachel Miller, but my friends call me Ollie.
I’m 17, but I’ll be 18 in a few weeks. It stinks being one of the youngest kids in my class.
Speaking of class, how does it feel to be done with high school?
Honestly, it hasn’t sunk in yet. I was a part of a student exchange program, and college is right around the corner.
What were you doing in your exchange program?
I went to study their culture, but really enjoyed studying their environment. My mom arranged for me to stay in Uruguay, and the fact that they never (or rarely) have any natural disasters kept me fascinated. Someday, I’d like to be an environmental scientist like my mom.
Where are you going to college?
I’ll be leaving for school in California, but hope to come back home to Texas for holidays. My mom works in California on occasion, so she’ll probably be up to visit me more than I’ll get to go home.
Is there anyone you’ll miss back home?
Alexis. Actually, I’m not sure how much I’ll miss her nagging me about the music I listen to and the permanent ponytail I wear. She’s really been a good friend though, especially since Mateo has given me the cold shoulder. I hate to admit it, but I’ll miss him too. Heck, I’ve been missing him for a while now.
I’m glad you mentioned music! Let’s move on to happier thoughts, and the Lightning Round:
